The Indiana Scholarship Tax Credit Program, allows donors to contribute to certified Scholarship Granting Organizations (or SGOs) so that these SGOs can provide eligible lower income families with scholarships to attend quality Catholic education that best suits their children’s needs.
As a donor (small business, corporate and individual in the state of Indiana) to our Scholarship Granting Organization of Northeast Indiana, Inc (SGONEI), you will receive an Indiana State tax credit equal to 50% of the amount given, in addition to the federal tax deduction for donating to a 501(c) (3). There is no size limitation on donations accepted from corporate donors.
The SGONEI was founded in 2011 to provide low and middle-income families with scholarships to attend the Catholic schools of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. All SGO gifts designated for Saint Pius X Catholic School directly support our students through tuition assistance, which ensures that students who are in most need can obtain a Christ-centered, Catholic education.
Donor Benefits: Donations, of any size, by Indiana residents to SGONEI qualify for a 50% direct income tax credit (refund) against Indiana state income tax liability while retaining deductibility of the full donation on the federal income tax return.
Student Benefits: Students receive tuition assistance for the current school year, and become eligible for the Indiana School Choice Scholarship each year going forward - up to $6,450 each year until graduation. For a student receiving the SGO award upon entering kindergarten, this would amount to a gift of $83,850 - all from just one donation to SGONEI.
HOW IT WORKS (EXAMPLE)
Depending on your tax bracket, a donation of $2,000 to the SGO could result in:
Donation to SGO | $2,000 |
50% state tax rebate | (-$1,000) |
25% federal tax deduction | (-$500) |
Net cost to you | $500 |
THE IMPACT OF YOUR DONATION
2021-2022 school year: SPX provided $100,050 in SGO scholarships to students from 39 families.
2022-2023 school year: Students from 33 families are seeking $90,000 in SGO scholarships. The need for tuition assistance has greatly increased due to the financial impact of COVID and greater availability of SGOs due to expanded income eligibility limits from the State of Indiana. The demand vastly outweighs the available funds in the Saint Pius X SGO account.

What is a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO)?
A certified Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) is an entity that awards scholarships to eligible students. Qualified SGOs receive funding for scholarships from private, charitable donations. Those who have donated to an SGO approved by the Department of Education will then be eligible to take advantage of a 50 percent credit against their individual or corporation state-tax liability.
