Through instrumental music, musicians enjoy praising God, growing musically and spiritually, and enjoying each other’s friendship. The many voices of the organ and of instrumental ensembles, with their great range of expression, add varied and colorful dimensions to the song of the assembly, especially with the addition of harmonization (Sing to the Lord, 42). The instrumentalist helps support, lead, and sustain the members of Saint Pius X (the gathered Assembly) to rightfully claim their role as full, conscious, and active participants in the liturgy through their gift of instrumental music. There are also times when the organ or other instruments may be played alone, such as a prelude before the Mass, an instrumental piece during the Preparation of the Gifts, or a postlude following the closing song (Sing to the Lord, 44).
