The tradition of "Lessons and Carols" was established in England on Christmas Eve, 1918, in the chapel of Kings College (Cambridge University) for the university community and for the city of Cambridge. The original service was adapted form an Order drawn up by E.W. Benson (later the Archbishop of Canterbury) used on Christmas Eve in 1880. Over the years, many churches of many faith traditions have adapted the service for their own use.
Saint Pius X presents Christmas Lessons and Carols on December 24 before each of our Christmas Eve Masses in the Church! This service is prepared with different scriptures and music appropriate to the liturgical season of Christmas. We listen to scripture readings recounting the promise of the Messiah and the Incarnation. Each scripture is followed by a Christmas carol or other song that reflects the scripture's message and a brief prayer.
