Is your 4 – 6 year- old so full of energy that they struggle to sit still in Mass? Do they complain that they don’t understand why we do what we do at Mass? Well, here is one thing that might help that situation.
Saint Pius offer a program called Children’s Liturgy of the Word for 4-6 year - old children, even the ones who can’t sit still!
What is Children's Liturgy of the Word, you wonder? It is a program that is offered on Sunday morning during the 8 am and 10 am Mass. After the opening prayers and right before the first reading, the Priest will invite the 4-6 year- old children to follow the red book (Children’s Lectionary) and their catechist. The catechist will lead the children to the PLC rooms, (by the Baptismal Font), where they will hear the same gospel reading that the people in church hear, only from the Children’s Lectionary. The catechist will explain the gospel in a way a 4 – 6 year- old might understand. Then they will pray the Intercessions (just like the people in church).
As time permits, they will sing songs, color, do a skit, an activity related to the gospel. Then during the preparation of the bread and wine, the catechist will return with the children and they will join their families for the liturgy of the Eucharist.
The children learn about the colors of the year and why we, stand for the gospel, how to do the sign of the cross, and so much more. I am always amazed at how much the children know. This program continues to grow and we are happy to have many children, however, we would love for the adults to come help too. There is no fee for this program, we just ask that you please sign-up to help a few times during the year. There are no special talents that you need, just come on back to help!
