Center for the Homeless Casserole Program

- This ministry provides home-cooked food weekly to the approximately 180 residents of the South Bend Center for the Homeless. Providing these meals offers the opportunity for our parishioners to perform the Corporal Works of Mercy to “Feed the Hungry and Comfort the Afflicted,” as well as serve as an important social justice outreach program for the parish.

  Volunteers are called upon about once every 4 months to prepare a casserole to serve 30 people.
  
  The recipe is given to the volunteer a week in advance.
  
  They are expected to purchase the ingredients (cost is $25 to $40), prepare the casserole and deliver it to the Parish.
  
  Total time involved is about 3-4 hours every 4 months.
  
  There are six team leaders who make reminder calls each month. This takes about a half-hour per month.
  
  There are six drivers who pick up the casseroles at the Church, deliver them to the center and bring pans back to the church. This takes about 1.5 hours per month.

  The volunteers must be able to prepare their casseroles and deliver them on time.
  
  We have backup procedures in place for all of the functions of the ministry. We also have a reimbursement process in the rare occasion the volunteers cannot afford the cost of ingredients.
