Too many people think that Hospice Care is about dying. Not so, Hospice is about living—living as well as possible until God calls us home. Everyone who is experiencing a life-limiting illness has a choice to make. One can choose to war against the inevitable victory of the illness, or one can choose the peace of living well up to the end of one’s natural life. I read somewhere that the choice is between “more days” or “more good days”.
Hospice volunteers work hard to provide “more good days” to those who have made the choice of peace; more good days for the patient and for the patient’s family and caregivers.
Hospice volunteers provide more good days in many ways. They can provide direct patient care to the inpatients in Hospice House. They can provide respite time for an exhausted caregiver by visiting a patient at home on a regular schedule. They can sit with and pray with an actively dying patient in a hospital or nursing home. They can make follow-up bereavement calls to family after the death of a loved one.
There are also other opportunities to volunteer in areas that do not involve patient/caregiver contact. There is office work, transportation, fundraising, event planning, etc.
If you feel you are called to a ministry that gives God’s children “more good days”, check out the Hospice Volunteer opportunities.
